Seme and Uke IV Special Guest by RathRaholand on DeviantArt

2005/7/3 15:43 I've read and heard about male-male relationships in Japan refered to as Seme and Uke. One is the taller/older top and the other is the smaller/younger bottom? Are all gay relationships in Japan based on this or is there an equal middleground for some?

3 Answers Sorted by: 7 Tori and Uke are roles defined relative to a technique. These terms quickly indicate who is doing what. Tori is the performer of the technique. Uke is the receiver of the technique. Take the straight punch technique. Tori punches. Uke is punched. Now take a headlock throw counter to a straight punch.

In general, in Yaoi/BL culture, seme/uke also refer to characters' specific physical and psychological characteristics: in most cases, the seme is depicted as the taller, bigger and more dominant one of the couple, while the seme is usually weaker, cuter, shier, and more submissive.

Seme," "uke," and "Suke " are terms referring to a character's role in a male/male sexual relationship mostly used in the Boys' Love (BL) genre community. "Seme" refers to the character who is the more dominant half and usually takes the lead in the general relationship as well as sexual relationship.

As mentioned in this answer, the terms seme and uke are used in yaoi to describe a duality: Yaoi fans have adapted these terms to describe the roles in a male/male relationship: the seme is the one who takes the traditional male role: initiates the relationship, "pursues" the uke and is usually "on top" during sex.

A character associated with the Boys' Love Genre, the Uke (or "Neko" in Girls' Love works) makes up the "receiving" half of a relationship (whereas in real life, sex roles are generally not as rigid as that portrayed in Yaoi and are also not "assigned" according to perceived masculinity).

A defining characteristic of yaoi is the practice of pairing characters in relationships according to the roles of seme, the sexual top or active pursuer, and uke, the sexual bottom or passive pursued.

The Meaning of Uke and Seme Uke (ๅ—ใ‘): The term Uke, in Japanese, literally means "receiver" or "one who receives". In the Yaoi context, Uke is the more passive, submissive, and generally younger or physically smaller character in the relationship.

Seme (attacker): The "active" partner, or top. Sometimes tachi, "sword" (or from tachiyaku, male roles in kabuki), by analogy to gay slang. (Seme and Uke come from martial arts terms.) Uke (defender or receiver): The "passive" partner, or bottom. Sometimes neko, "cat", by analogy to gay slang.

The terms seme and uke also mean "top" and "bottom," but they're used by fujoshi in their BL doujinshi and fanfiction world, which means they have nothing to do with real life. In 2D, it's seme and uke, in 3D, tachi and neko. Or so was the case. Nowadays, LGBT people started to use seme and uke IRL too, mixing the LGBT subculture with the otaku.

The seme is the one who pursues the uke. In stereotypical terms, the seme tends to be taller/older/richer, etc. sort of more "masculine" (although I really dislike these gender normative assumptions.) Anyway -- the uke tends to be shorter, shy, etc. See Dean and Pharm from UWMA for a very classic seme/uke couple.

Still can't figure out who's the Uke and who's the Seme here. The true answer is that it's none of our business. However I see the two of them being switches with Mya-chan taking the seme role first. Yes!!! A thousand times yes!!! Mya-chan would definitely take the lead first, but in the end, they're both switches. It's still up in the air.
