2005/7/3 15:43 I've read and heard about male-male relationships in Japan refered to as Seme and Uke. One is the taller/older top and the other is the smaller/younger bottom? Are all gay relationships in Japan based on this or is there an equal middleground for some?

The terms seme and uke also mean "top" and "bottom," but they're used by fujoshi in their BL doujinshi and fanfiction world, which means they have nothing to do with real life. In 2D, it's seme and uke, in 3D, tachi and neko. Or so was the case. Nowadays, LGBT people started to use seme and uke IRL too, mixing the LGBT subculture with the otaku.

The seme is the one who pursues the uke. In stereotypical terms, the seme tends to be taller/older/richer, etc. sort of more "masculine" (although I really dislike these gender normative assumptions.) Still can't figure out who's the Uke and who's the Seme here. The true answer is that it's none of our business. However I see the two of them being switches with Mya-chan taking the seme role first. Yes!!! A thousand times yes!!! Mya-chan would definitely take the lead first, but in the end, they're both switches. It's still up in the air.
